ESSEC’s Knowledge-Lab (K-lab) has recently been equipped with a lightboard. This technological tool is mainly used for teaching purposes, in particular to create educational videos and interactive lessons.
A transparent glass panel backlit by a LED light integrated into the screen, the teacher can write or draw on it using fluorescent markers.
These writings and presentations are then visible and recorded by a camera positioned on the other side of the board. This innovative device makes it possible to record educational videos while facing the audience.
With this acquisition, K-lab aims to diversify its online video course formats and enrich its teaching practices.
It offers significant advantages that meet the current challenges of teaching, particularly in a digital and hybrid context:
- Increased student engagement: Direct visual contact between teacher and learners, combined with dynamic visuals, makes lessons more interactive and captivating.
- Educational clarity: Backlit, luminous writing makes complex concepts easy to understand, with real-time explanations that follow a logical progression. Texts and drawings stand out clearly, which is particularly useful for concepts requiring detailed visualisations (Mathematics, Science, Economics, etc.).
- Modernising practices: The lightboard reflects an innovative approach that enhances the institution and meets the expectations of students, who are used to high-quality digital content.
- Ease of use and versatility: Simple to set up, it adapts to a wide range of disciplines and learning styles, while meeting the standards of modern educational platforms such as YouTube or Coursera.
The K-lab instructional designer plays a key role for teachers, helping them to get to grips with the technology of this equipment more easily by combining technical support, educational advice and encouragement to experiment.
Even though we are starting to get a few projects and requests from teachers to use the lightboard, the challenge this year is to maximise its adoption by combining awareness-raising, support and promotion activities, while making it simple and accessible to use.
I’ve tested the lightboard and plan to use it in my Economic Growth and Development course. It’s an interesting tool for teachers of subjects like Economics. It allows you to record short, very dynamic video clips to present fundamental formulas and theories that students can return to throughout the class. It is an excellent complement to face-to-face and online courses.

I use the lightboard to create video reminders of the most crucial derivations for students in my Business Economics class. Given the diverse background of the students in my classroom, I hope this content will allow those who might find this part of the course challenging to catch up, without losing the attention in the class of those who might find the math straightforward. The K-Lab team accompanied me throughout the process of creation of the videos and above all explained to me how to organize the content on the board to create a visually compelling image.

Enseigner avec un lightboard est désormais possible à l’ESSEC !

Le Knowledge-Lab (K-lab) de l’ESSEC s’est récemment équipé d’un lightboard. Outil technologique utilisé principalement dans le cadre de l’enseignement, il est notamment utilisé pour la création de vidéos éducatives et de cours interactifs.
Panneau de verre transparent rétroéclairé grâce à un éclairage LED intégré à l’écran, l’enseignant peut y écrire ou dessiner avec des marqueurs fluorescents.
Ces écrits et présentations sont alors visibles et enregistrés par une caméra positionnée de l’autre côté du tableau. Le dispositif innovant permet ainsi d’enregistrer des vidéos pédagogiques naturellement en faisant face à l’auditoire.
Avec cette acquisition, l’objectif pour le K-lab est de diversifier les formats de vidéos de cours en ligne et d’enrichir les pratiques pédagogiques.
Il propose des avantages non négligeables qui répondent aux enjeux actuels de l’enseignement, en particulier dans un contexte numérique et hybride :
- Un engagement accru des étudiants : Le contact visuel direct entre l’enseignant et les apprenants, associé à des visuels dynamiques, rend les cours plus interactifs et captivants.
- Une clarté pédagogique : L’écriture lumineuse et rétroéclairée facilite la compréhension de concepts complexes, avec des explications en temps réel qui suivent une progression logique. Les textes et dessins ressortent clairement , ce qui est particulièrement utile pour les notions nécessitant des visualisations détaillées (Mathématiques, Sciences, Economie, etc.).
- Une modernisation des pratiques : Le lightboard reflète une approche innovante qui valorise l’établissement et répond aux attentes des étudiants, habitués aux contenus numériques de haute qualité.
- Une facilité d’utilisation et de polyvalence : Simple à mettre en œuvre, il s’adapte à de nombreuses disciplines et styles d’apprentissage, tout en répondant aux standards des plateformes éducatives modernes comme YouTube ou Coursera.
L’ingénieur pédagogique du K-lab joue un rôle clé auprès de l’enseignant puisqu’il lui permet de s’approprier plus facilement la technologie de cet équipement en combinant support technique, conseils pédagogiques et encouragement à l’expérimentation.
Même si nous commençons à avoir quelques projets et demandes de professeurs pour utiliser le lightboard, l’enjeu cette année est de maximiser son adoption en combinant des actions de sensibilisation, accompagnement, et valorisation, tout en rendant son utilisation simple et accessible.
J’ai testé le lightboard et j’envisage de l’utiliser dans le cadre de mon cours Croissance Économique et Développement . C’est un outil intéressant pour les enseignants de matières comme l’Economie. Il permet d’enregistrer des capsules vidéos courtes très dynamiques pour présenter des formules et théories
