Apprendre l’économie, un vrai plaisir

Par André Fourçans, Professeur émérite d’économie, ESSEC Business School, vient de publier L’économie expliquée à ma fille, 3ème édition, Points Poche, Seuil.

Pour beaucoup, apprendre l’économie est une activité ingrate et ennuyeuse. Quant aux économistes, notamment ceux qui prennent le risque d’enseigner cette science « lugubre » (selon le tendre qualificatif d’un esthète anglais du XIXème siècle), ils ne seraient que de tristes êtres au cœur sec et à l’âme rabougrie- s’ils en ont une ! 

Ces banalités sont tellement répandues que j’ose à peine les mentionner. Loin d’être ennuyeuse, l’économie peut être passionnante. Elle n’est pas une langue morte dont la seule fonction serait de stimuler les neurones ou de donner lieu à quelques jeux intellectuels ou esthétiques. Ni un ensemble de techniques plus ou moins rébarbatives et réservées aux « savants fous » de la recherche et de l’enseignement.

This article offers a follow-up to a previously published piece “The Design Thinking Approach Applied to Pedagogy: Human-Centered and Impactful Learning Experiences”. In this second installment, we focus on a practical example of implementing an innovative, learner-centered assessment strategy.

In this context, we immediately thought of our ongoing collaboration with Liem Nguyen, Professor of Management Practice at ESSEC since 2023. Driven by a desire to foster strong attention and engagement among his students, Liem Nguyen approached the K-lab to explore various pedagogical methods and tools capable of delivering seamless, tech-enhanced learning experiences—for both instructors and learners. Supported by instructional designer Nadia Kelmouss, he selected the FeedbackFruits platform, and more specifically, the “Group Member Evaluation” tool.

IA génératives et compétences informationnelles des étudiants : le rôle du K-lab

L’émergence des intelligences artificielles génératives (IAG) transforme le paysage éducatif. C’est acquis, ces outils capables de produire du contenu multimodal (textes, images, sons, vidéos, code…) sont entrés dans les pratiques universitaires.

De nombreuses études confirment une adoption massive des IAG par les étudiants dans leur quotidien (voir par exemple “AI or not AI: what students want” du Digital Education Council publié en 2024). Au sein du K-lab, nous avons nous-mêmes réalisé un sondage auprès des étudiants de MS en septembre 2024 qui corrobore cette tendance : les IAG – ChatGPT en tête – sont devenues en l’espace de quelques mois des “alliées” dans la réalisation des travaux académiques que ce soit pour l’assistance à l’écriture, la génération d’idées, la traduction ou encore la synthèse de documents…

Teaching with a lightboard is now possible at ESSEC!

ESSEC’s Knowledge-Lab (K-lab) has recently been equipped with a lightboard. This technological tool is mainly used for teaching purposes, in particular to create educational videos and interactive lessons.

A transparent glass panel backlit by a LED light integrated into the screen, the teacher can write or draw on it using fluorescent markers.
These writings and presentations are then visible and recorded by a camera positioned on the other side of the board. This innovative device makes it possible to record educational videos while facing the audience.

Writing and Publishing Cases at ESSEC

On October 15th 2024 ESSEC Dean’s office, K-lab and Together team organized an event about case writing and publishing.This event was an opportunity to gather the ESSEC case writing community and reiterate the importance of using the case method in business schools. It was also an opportunity to embark new colleagues, sharing good practices and presenting the resources and support available for ESSEC professors interested in writing and publishing cases. Last but not least, the event provided inspiration to colleagues by celebrating ESSEC Professor Harris Kyriakou’s recently awarded case.

Training the leaders of tomorrow with the Sustainability Case Factory

ESSEC and all the partner institutions involved in the Sustainability Case Factory project, including CY University, are committed to environmental and social transition, with the aim of training 100% of students in sustainable development issues by 2030, using new teaching methods, tools and content. 

As case studies are widely used in graduate and postgraduate management studies, transferring this approach to the field of socio-ecological transitions, and developing new cases and teaching materials related to these issues, is a key strategic focus.
