Statistics play a pivotal role in today’s data-driven world. There is a high chance that, in a career lasting a few decades, a professional will be part of a project that demands a working knowledge of numbers, data, and their visualizations.
The way we teach statistics must reflect its growing importance in both professional and societal contexts. It should combine hands-on application with thoughtful interpretation, helping learners build analytical thinking skills while bridging the gap between classroom learning, industry practice and everyday experiences. Just as importantly, it must promote inclusivity by addressing gender dynamics.

This year’s Pedagogical workshops explored the link between pedagogy and inclusion.
After a keynote by ESSEC Professors Karoline Strauss and Junko Takagi (see article “Nurturing Inclusive Leaders: Exploring Pedagogy and Care in Higher Education”, Pedagolab, 22/03/2024), working groups brought together experiences and pedagogical expertise to take a holistic approach to what is being done and/or could be done better for “pedagogy and inclusion” at ESSEC, from three points of view :

Beyond the transmission of knowledge, education in the XXI century is geared towards creating responsible leaders, able to create and promote inclusive workplaces. This requires higher education institutions to think deeply about the link between pedagogy and inclusion: How to teach inclusion? How to teach inclusively? and how in societies where the caring economy is becoming increasingly central, how can education be considered as “care”.
With this perspective in mind, Estefania Santacreu-Vasut, Associate Dean for Pedagogy, along with the K-lab, have chosen to explore the theme of “pedagogy and inclusion” for this academic year 2023/2024. The first educational workshop took place on November, 17th.

Impulsé par Emmanuelle le Nagard, précédente Vice-doyenne à la Pédagogie, et le K-lab, le blog Pedagolab@ESSEC a été créé en 2018 avec, pour objectif principal, de relayer, faire connaître et partager les initiatives, expérimentations et actualités en lien avec la transformation de la pédagogie à l’ESSEC mais aussi plus largement dans l’enseignement supérieur.
Launched by Elisabeth Forget ESSEC group disability référent, the Handicap & Talents Certificate aims to train the ESSEC community to face the challenges raised by disability in the workplace and to strengthen their position as an inclusive manager, by following during a month a bilingual French-English program of 12 conferences 100% online.
Sponsored by Professor Junko Takagi, Director of the Leadership and Diversity Chair (author of the article Flip or Whiteboard: What’s your choice?) and Laurent Bibard, Professor of Philosophy and Management (author of two articles on Pedagolab), the Handicap & Talents certification program is structured around 4 themes: philosophy & diversity, legal framework, company disability employment policies & innovations and testimonials.
Since 2021, the certificate has been opened to students from CY Alliance schools, thanks a new partnership agreement.

Sous l’impulsion d’Elisabeth Forget, référente handicap à l’ESSEC, les étudiants de l’ESSEC peuvent désormais étudier la langue des signes française (LSF). Ce nouveau cours permet de répondre à la demande croissante d’étudiants désireux d’en apprendre plus, sur cette langue et son inclusion dans notre société. Au niveau de l’école, l’offre de ce nouveau cours s’insère dans le cadre de la Mission Handi Capacités ESSEC, ainsi que dans le pilier Together de la stratégie RISE.
Dans cet article, nous interviewons Maylis Balyan, chargée de cours à l’ESSEC. Elle enseigne ce nouveau cours depuis janvier 2022. Elle partage avec nous son expérience pédagogique.
