Promoting Reflective, Collaborative, and Meaningful Learning

Peer Assessment: Theories & Best Practices
Peer assessment provides a range of benefits that foster meaningful learning*. In his Taxonomy of Significant Learning, Fink highlights six key areas of competence, predominantly focused on the development of soft skills: learning how to learn, foundational knowledge, application, caring, the human dimension, and integration.
Peer assessment is a holistic activity that encompasses these six domains of Fink’s taxonomy. It encourages students to engage in reflective practice, not only when evaluating their peers’ work but also in considering their own (“human dimension”). This reflection nurtures critical competencies such as critical thinking, empathy, autonomy, collaboration, motivation, and personal development (“caring” and “learning how to learn”). Moreover, peer assessment raises the cognitive complexity of the learning process, positioning students to analyze and evaluate assignments while also providing constructive feedback. This dual role enhances knowledge retention by applying course concepts and engaging in subsequent self-reflective and metacognitive processes (“foundational knowledge,” “application,” and “integration”).
When clearly articulated to students, peer assessment can have a profound and enduring impact on their learning. For peer assessment to be effective, it is essential that the pedagogical objectives and relevance of the activity within the broader learning pathway are well-communicated and understood. Several best practices can facilitate this process:
- Clearly explain the presence and importance of peer assessment in the syllabus and during the first class;
- Provide students with a detailed and precise assessment rubric in advance;
- Offer guidance on optimizing the evaluation process, such as how much time to allocate per submission and strategies to minimize cognitive biases;
- Provide a model response (either custom-designed or based on previous years) that exemplifies the expectations, both in terms of deliverables and constructive feedback;
- Demonstrating, or having students analyze, a counterexample can also serve as a valuable pedagogical tool.
Peer assessment is particularly effective when employed as a formative activity. For instance, before students submit a final deliverable (which will be evaluated by the instructor), they could be asked to submit a draft for peer review. Alongside the quality of the final deliverable, the integration of peer feedback into their work, as well as the quality of the feedback they provide to others, could form a substantial part of the final grade. This approach encourages students to engage deeply and effectively with the peer assessment process.
Implementation
Moodle includes a built-in tool for peer assessment called “Workshop.” However, the collaborative features of this tool are somewhat limited; it only supports individual assessments of individual deliverables, which may not align with the needs of ESSEC instructors, who often prioritize group work. To address these limitations, the K-lab has adopted FeedbackFruits, a leading solution for teaching and learning.
FeedbackFruits’ Peer Review tool offers extensive flexibility in terms of deliverable formats (documents, audio, video, images, websites, etc.), submission and evaluation options (individual submission with individual evaluation, individual submission with group evaluation, group submission with individual evaluation, group submission with group evaluation, including intra-group and inter-group evaluation), and customizable grading criteria (which can be presented as rubrics, scales, or purely comment-based feedback).
Additionally, several specific settings can be activated, such as self-assessment, anonymity, the timing of feedback visibility (immediately, after a certain date, or never), an AI-generated “Feedback Coach,” writing tips, and a checklist of best practices.
Furthermore, FeedbackFruits provides access to “learning journeys,” which are multi-step educational templates, as well as a Learning Design Academy—a rich resource for creating rubrics and maximizing the potential of peer assessment activities.
